A unique gathering of Democratic Party clubs, grassroots organizers, and activists assembled in Modesto on April 29, 2017 to learn from each other and network. The CA Organizer & Activist Training Fair for CD10 was organized by the Democratic Women’s Club of Stanislaus and Stanislaus Resistance and sponsored by UDW/AFSCME Local 3930. The event brought together activists from within CD10 and from around California who are interested in helping to flip the district from “red” to “blue” in 2018.
Presenters included local and state Democratic Party experts and organizers from newer groups like Swing Left, Working America, and California Organizes, who shared tools and techniques for canvassing, phone banks, voter registration, rapid-response texting, and more.
Christine Pelosi, a leader in the DNC, spoke about how Democrats can win in her training session, “Campaign Boot Camp.” She called on activists to “find your call to service” and showed how to break a message down into our pros, their cons, and possible responses before canvassing or phone banks. Later, she autographed copies of her book, Campaign Boot Camp 2.0.
Susan Pfeifer, another presenter with deep experience in Democratic Party campaigning, showed how to set up a highly visible table for voter registration and described the best practices for signage and outreach.
Meanwhile, organizers from activist groups such as Our Revolution, Swing Left, Indivisible, and others had tables with literature where they met and talked with activists throughout the day at the union hall where the meeting was held. Two candidates for Congress in 2018, Dotty Nygard and Michael Barkley, interacted with activists at the training fair.
Alejandro Romo Carrillo of Central Valley Views provided Facebook Live video services, and food sponsors were North Valley Labor Federation and Stanislaus-Tuolumne Counties Central Labor Council. Thanks to all who contributed and made this activist training fair a success!
